Mahinepua Peninsula Track
Mahinepua Peninsula track is one of those that will leave you speechless. Not so well known among tourists, probably because locals are trying to keep it a secret.. This track offers a spectacular walk with breathtaking views along the historic Mahinepua Scenic Reserve.
Considered as one of the best short walks in Northland.
Only 5km and 2 hours walking. But in fact it will take you much longer, taking pictures and admiring the views.
During the walk along the spine of the peninsula, you will enjoy the dramatic views of the coastline, which is different from the 2 sides of the peninsula. With rocky pools and dark waters on the left, and pink sands and calm bays on the right. If to look further, you will see the unreal views of the Bay of islands, look as far as Cape Karikari and south over the Cavalli Islands to Cape Brett!
The walk has been recently upgraded, with new steps installed on the steeper parts for safety and archaeological protection.
Overall, the Mahinepua track is in excellent condition and is suitable for people of all ages.
During the walk you will climb couple hills, pass a couple of sheltered bays, hike through native bush tracks and see kiwi bees harvesting the honey from blooming manuka (white) and kanuka (pink) trees.
Important to know
- Bring water (1 liter per person), hat and sunglasses. Although it’s a short track, it gets really hot during the day.
- Photo cameras are a must!
- No dogs are allowed on the track, as this peninsula has an abundance of native bird species that are protected by DOC.
- Care needs to be taken around the trig, especially in wet weather.
- There are many steep drop-offs and cliffs so children need to be supervised at all times.

Location
The track is located in the middle of nowhere (as everything in New Zealand), but this one has only 1 road leading to it, and none of the tourist or public buses dont go there, so the only way is to come on your own car.
